A Brief Introduction to Nostalgia

In short, nostalgia occurs when you think back to a particular happy time or memory in your life, which results in feeling warm and fuzzy. According to the article The Incredible Powers Of Nostalgia from the Huffington Post, it states:

“…nostalgizing helps people relate their past experiences to their present lives in order to make greater meaning of it all. The result can boost their mood and reduce stress.” The article goes on to state that, “…after nostalgizing people donate more generously to charity. And sharing a nostalgic conversation with a friend, family member or romantic partner makes you more supportive and considerate, and less argumentative.”

TL;DR: Nostalgia gives you that warm feeling when you think back to past memories, which it benefits you in many ways.

Why Nostalgia is Contagious

Have you noticed that when you reminisce about something that it spreads like wildfire? This is because nostalgia is a social-based feeling. Psychology Today states in a recent article the following:

“…nostalgia not only makes people feel connected, it makes them want to connect. When people bring to mind a nostalgic memory they become more motivated to socialize with others and even meet new people. Nostalgia brings out people’s social side.”

Want proof? Look at the success of Pokémon Go. All those 90’s kids (including myself) who grew up with Pokémon rose up with the release of this social-based, geo-location styled game. It spread like wildfire. In a little over 2 months of being released, it reached, “500 million downloads” according to “75+ Incredible Pokemon Go Stats and Facts (February 2017).”

Why You Should Listen

Since nostalgia is actually a good thing for you, you should indulge in it every now and then. What’s more is you’re not only taking a trip down memory lane, but you’re doing so with our Branchers as well! These are the songs we feel nostalgic with. According to the article, “What is Nostalgia Good For? Quite a Bit, Research Shows” from the New York Times, it states:

“A quick way to induce nostalgia is through music…” The article also mentioned that “… experimenters induced nostalgia by playing hit songs from the past for some people and letting them read lyrics to their favorite songs. Afterward, these people were more likely than a control group to say that they felt ‘loved’ and that ‘life is worth living.’”

So what are you waiting for? Sit back, hit play and let that warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia take over.

“Nostalgia is very important to people. It gives them a chance to return to a simpler, perhaps happier, time. The songs that we listened to in our formative years leave a lasting impact on us; They pop up on the radio and we’re transported back to those days when we were experiencing our firsts: Our first kiss, our first dance, our first party. We listen and remember what it was like to be young again.” – Kendra Tallman, Email Marketing Associate at Red Branch Media (@Kendra_RBM)
