I have curly hair. It has both delighted and bedeviled me my entire life, and I’ve done everything to it. I’ve highlighted it. I’ve dyed it. I’ve straightened it. I’ve gotten keratin treatments, deep conditioning treatments, hot oil treatments. I’ve endured bad dye jobs, bad haircuts, extensions, clip-ins, tie-ins, and glue-in fake ponytails and hairpieces.

My collection of hair accessories is extensive: headbands, head wraps, head scarves, bonnets, barrettes, rubber bands, scrunchies. But the thing I come back to—the thing I buy over and over again—is bobby pins.

Bobby pins are constant. There is never a time when I don’t need one. There isn’t a hairstyle they can’t support if you have enough of them. They’re simply the most ubiquitous arsenal in my hair journey, more essential than curling irons, straightening irons, and crimpers; more reliable than blow dryers, hot rollers, and heatless curlers.
