Short workweeks are stressful but here all the things that happened and you should definitely know about them to get your week started!
EMPLOYEE OR CONTRACTOR?
According to a court in Florida, Uber drivers are employees. Does this change how you view your own corporate structure? To quote Jim Durbin: “Companies won’t hire freelancers if they’re eligible to be employees. That makes it very hard for that supposed 40% freelance nation to come about.” Carrie Corbin also weighed in, saying: “What the article doesn’t say is what the implications are for Uber as a company and the rest of the drivers. The problem is we are using IRS law to legislate matters of employment, as if we don’t already have enough conflicting employment laws.” (Silicon Beat)
These are Enchilada and Burrito Instagrams, NACHOS!
I mean, this guy, AMIRITE? He’s printing out Instagrams, attaching them to 3rd grade-esque foam board and selling them for CASH? I literally had to talk my actual third grader out of selling print outs of a coloring book door to door. Who even owns anything anymore?! (Apparatus Mag)
ABUZZ I TELL YOU!
The recruiting world was the aforementioned abuzz about this auto response from an employer. And it is very clever. Engaging, funny, smart and even sets candidate expectations all in one neat package. While the tone doesn’t work for everyone, the idea DEFINITELY should. C’mon people! How hard is it if a ROBOT can do it. (CareerCloud)
THE WOODSHED
Tim Sackett likes to take people behind it. This week, it was Fast Company and he’s super right about what total and utter crap this article is. While I understand it (it was written by someone who WISHES these were the rules and has never had kids, a health scare or paid rent on a big A$$ office that new recruits didn’t *sniff* wanna come into) it’s just not reality. Anyway the new rules of work just don’t jibe with what many people in the world or even the nation are experiencing. Anyone ever wonder if the chasm between Silicon Valley and Silicon errywhere else is becoming ridiculous? (The Tim Sackett Project)
NOT THE MAMA
China Gorman took her former self to task for being a little TOO standoffish. It’s a really useful article because I literally tell recruits that I will not be their mother at this company. Maybe I should reconsider? In reality, China is tackling the notion of happiness at work, but with the holacracy experiment having mixed results, is the happiness spiel all talk? (China Gorman)
ONE OF THESE THINGS LOOKS LIKE THE OTHER:
Hey sometimes things look alike, what can I say? Today in proof that there is nothing new under the sun, I pointed out some visual marketing elements of two talent acquisition products. They are NOT the same, but it’s not a slam. It’s like Dennis Quaid and Kevin Costner. Not the same actor, but no one can blame me for mixing up the two. Anyway, the tools in question are workshape.io and majei — both cool. (Facebook)
