6 Things You Should Know Before Starting Your Workweek (Sept. 21)

Hello, friends! I’m back. After a crazy Inbound and a bout of the flu and two launched websites later, I’m in it to win it with all the stories that you NEED to read in our space before starting your workweek.

SNACKS BE PISSING PEOPLE OFF

Carrie Corbin took issue with an article from USAToday that cited a small study that says snacks make for happier employees. Not that I blame her. The article focuses mostly on millennials in funded startups and basically seems to boil employer branding and engagement down to a Snickers bar. (USAToday)

SLOW SOLDIER WOMEN BE PISSING PEOPLE OFF

Tim Sackett wrote a piece about how no one in the HR blogosphere is talking about the sucky results that inclusion has had in the boot camps of America. He then goes on to do so. Citing Germano’s assessment in Time, he comes to the conclusion that inclusiveness does not work in every situation and posits that this can be applied to corporate America. Tim is one of my favorite grown up gingers but I must disagree. Others said it nicer than me here. Some people just scribbled their straw men. (Facebook)

LOU ADLER THINKS ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT FOR RECRUITING

Lou is right, they aren’t. And he gives really great points as to why they are not (and some alternate, actionable ideas, which I like and use!) But the point that gets missed is that many of these tools weren’t built for 1) the recruiting world, but the managing and coaching world and 2) the fact that the world of work continues to change and cultural fit and engagement are more important to employers than ever. So the initial metrics used may not be entirely wrong, but I’m not sure he’s 100% on the money in that they shouldn’t be used in recruitment. They should be, just not as a disqualifier or sole measure. (LinkedIn)

THIS HAPPENED AND IT’S GORGEOUS

Kyle Lagunas continues to stun as the analyst to watch. Yes, we’re doing the site. No, he won’t let me use the catchphrase of “taking the anal out of analyst”. His site is starting to take shape and I’m excited to see what’s next! (lhra.io)

MAWR AUTHORS IN OUR MIDST

Raj Sheth, CEO of Recruiterbox, published a pretty awesome book about hiring for a startup, which he’s been knee deep in for the last couple of years. Get your free ebook here or leave a review on Amazon. (RecruiterBox)

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT 23 SUCKS ROCKS

This guy sent a naked pic of himself to his interviewer. Twice. A Chicago-based 23-year-old sent the most personal touch of all post-interview. I think a “thank you” card may have been a better way to go. He has been warned to “cease all contact with the victim”. Job Denied. (Entrepreneur)
