5 Tips To A More Professional LinkedIn Profile

Best Practices, Social Media

Whether you are using LinkedIn for job searching or not, you should constantly be updating your profile. I am a fairly new user to LinkedIn and can tell you that I see many profiles that contain irrelevant things. I want to give my guide to having a basic more professional looking profile.

Neweric1. Profile Pictures

Make sure you have a profile picture that looks professional. What I mean is, you should be wearing something nice and the picture should clearly show your face. LinkedIn is not a place for you to cut someone out that has a beer in their hand. The absolute worst pictures I’ve seen on LinkedIn have been profile pictures that include friends or family in them. Do you take your children or spouse with you when you apply for jobs or head to an interview? I would hope not!

2. Add Pictures, Videos, and Presentations

A feature that was introduced not to long ago on Linkedin was the ability for users to add rich media to their pages. Updating this often will make your page stand out among a lot of other profiles. When you were younger didn’t you love looking at the pictures in books? Well, people still like that!

The summary section of your profile should detail who you are as a professional. “If you want to increase your chances that you will appear in someone’s search your summary should be at least 40 words”, Linkedin says. Remember to use keywords and phrases that are commonly used in job descriptions.

4. Endorsements

While I think that this is an easy way for someone to recognize the work that you do, I don’tScreen Shot 2013-10-17 at 12.52.16 PM always think that endorsements are valuable. There are even some users that have complained that connections have endorsed them for irrelevant skills. With that being said, I think that allowing connections to vote up your skills and areas of expertise that you have selected is a neat feature. Make sure that you are editing the irrelevant ones as they may come up every once in a while.

At first when my boss kept telling me to do it I thought it would be this long process but it really wasn’t. All you have to do it click edit profile and change it in the next screen that appears. This will allow people to search for you a lot easier rather than trying to search for you in their search bar.

I hope that these tips will help some people clean up their profiles. I know when I was first creating mine it took me a few times. Remember someone is always looking! If you have any tips that I missed comment below.
